Spider-Noir is a project clearly born from the massive cultural footprint of the Spider-Verse franchise. The character, originally voiced by Nicolas Cage in the animated films, became an instant fan favorite; therefore, it was both shocking and exhilarating when it was confirmed that Cage would transition into a live-action version of the role.
There has been some online chatter regarding the decision to name the protagonist Ben Reilly instead of the traditional Peter Parker. While this shift has caused some initial confusion, it is a fascinating creative choice that the series will undoubtedly address, perhaps as a way to distinguish this "jaded" veteran from other versions of the hero. Despite the involvement of executive producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, rumors suggest this is a standalone iteration rather than a direct extension of the animated "Noir" we met in 2018.
Regardless of its multiversal coordinates, the show looks outstanding. By casting seasoned "heavies" like Brendan Gleeson and Jack Huston, the production signals a deep commitment to the hardboiled noir aesthetic. This isn't just a superhero show with a coat of grey paint; it feels like a legitimate 1930s crime drama. With an A-list cast and impressive, big-budget special effects, it is clear no expense was spared.
It is a great time to be a genre fan. Lord and Miller are coming off the massive success of their Project Hail Mary adaptation, and with the Spider-Man: Brand New Day film on the horizon, we are being spoiled with premium projects. Spider-Noir looks like it will be an exciting contributor to this new wave of "prestige" superhero storytelling.
