Ray's Reaction
One of my most personally anticipated returns this year is Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. I am well aware of the widespread criticism regarding the current regime's handling of the franchise, and unfortunately, I tend to agree with much of it. However, I still firmly believe that Strange New Worlds remains the best of the bunch. Based on this new trailer, it feels as though the show is leaning even harder into the legacy of the Original Series (TOS), featuring more of Paul Wesley’s Captain Kirk and some wonderfully "high-concept" locales, including a planet of dinosaurs and a cowboy-themed world.
This approach is actually par for the course for Star Trek. The Original Series famously leaned into these genre-bending tropes, such as the 1940s gangster planet in "A Piece of the Action" or the encounter with the Greek God Apollo in "Who Mourns for Adonais?". A common criticism of the Paramount+ era is that the shows don't always "feel" like Star Trek, but this upcoming season, which even features episodes directed by the legendary Jonathan Frakes, definitely seems to capture that classic spirit.
It will be fascinating to see what narrative seeds are planted this year, especially since Season 5 has been confirmed as the final season and has reportedly already completed production. This suggests a very deliberate and defined story arc that the creators are working toward.
There are several elements I’m anxious to see resolved, particularly how the series continues to handle the tragic, predetermined fate of Captain Christopher Pike. I’m also looking forward to seeing how the rest of the iconic TOS crew eventually integrates into the Enterprise family; we’ve already seen the arrival of Scotty, and fans are eager to see if or how characters like Chekov, Sulu, and Doctor McCoy will make their debuts. There is also the interesting dilemma of how the show will handle the exits of these new characters from the show that we have learned to love.
Despite the excitement, there is an undeniable sense of melancholy knowing the end is in sight. While there was previous talk of a "Year One" spinoff or other continuations, those hopes were dampened by reports that the standing sets have already been struck. With no word on new live-action series following the divisive reception of Starfleet Academy and other recent projects, the platform's future with the franchise seems uncertain. Perhaps a hiatus is a blessing in disguise, allowing the dust to settle on what has been a very polarizing era for the Trek fandom.

Final Verdict: Engage!

- The Mars Western: The "cowboy planet" seen in the teaser is actually a frontier settlement located on Mars, near the Valles Marineris canyon.
- Nimoy Nostalgia: Spock’s hairstyle this season has been adjusted to more closely mirror the "Beatle-brow" look worn by Leonard Nimoy in the 1960s Original Series.
- Scotty’s Promotion: After his debut in Season 2, Martin Quinn (Scotty) has been promoted to a series regular for this season.
- The Final Frontier: Season 4 was filmed back-to-back with Season 5, which has been officially confirmed as the series' final chapter.
