Guy Ritchie is arguably the premier mainstream commercial director working in Hollywood today, and In the Grey looks like the pinnacle of the "breezy but brutal" style he’s perfected.

The action here feels sharp and high-stakes, leaning into the kinetic energy of The Gentlemen while maintaining the grit of The Covenant. The cast is affable and easy on the eyes with Eiza Gonzalez and seeing Cavill and Gyllenhaal share the screen under Ritchie's direction is a massive win for fans of top-tier action cinema. Just this brief glimpse of the film we can see the cast has a palpable, charming, chemistry that will be fun to see.

I really appreciate that these types of movies are still finding a home on the big screen. As much as I enjoy comic book and sci-fi films, I believe we still need traditional, straight-ahead action movies in theaters where they belong. My only concern is that Guy Ritchie is coming off the underwhelming Fountain of Youth.

However, I think that was more of an exception than an indication of his current quality. Ritchie has perfected this blend of comedy, intense action, and high stakes. It is also great to see Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González working with him again; they are quickly becoming his preferred troupe of performers. Hopefully, In The Grey will lead to even more collaborations between this talented cast and director.
