The Trailer

Trailer Reaction

Following in the footsteps of Denzel Washington’s iconic performance is no small feat, but the first look at Netflix’s Man on Fire suggests a version that is leaner, meaner, and perfectly suited for the streaming era.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II returns to the streaming world with another highly anticipated series. Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed Disney+ tv series Wonder Man. He returns with another A+ property: Man on Fire. He brings a quiet, simmering intensity to the role that feels immediate and dangerous. The action choreography shown in the trailer leans into a modern "tactical" style—fast, brutal, and efficient.

While the original Tony Scott film was known for its frantic editing, this new vision seems to favor a more grounded, atmospheric tension that pulls you into the emotional stakes of the central relationship.

Unbenownst to most fans of the Tony Scott film, Man on Fire was just one of a series of books featuring the lead character. So unlike the movie, where the main protagonist suffers a grim fate, we can likely be assured that he will survive another day to possibly continue his adventures in the future.

Streaming platforms have become the new home for these mid-budget, high-concept action dramas, and this looks to be a flagship title for Netflix. My only hope is that it maintains the heart of the source material amidst the explosive set pieces. If the chemistry between Abdul-Mateen and his young charge hits the right notes, we could be looking at the next great action series.
