Ray's Thoughts

It has been approximately seven years since the world class craftsmen at LAIKA last released a feature-length project, and according to their official press materials, they are returning to theaters with their most ambitious and globally accessible film yet. It is that final description that invites a bit of critical curiosity, as LAIKA’s filmography has never exactly suffered from being inaccessible. Their previous theatrical outing was the thoroughly family-friendly Missing Link in 2019, which tracked an affable, charming Bigfoot on an adventure to discover his hidden Yeti cousins in the Himalayas. Prior to that, LAIKA delivered the deeply poignant Kubo and the Two Strings, which masterfully explored familial legacy, memory, and profound grief in a beautifully realized feudal Japan. Of course, their most culturally significant and commercially successful milestone remains Coraline, which brilliantly charted a young child’s harrowing journey into a deceptively ideal alternate reality.
Based on this newly unveiled teaser, Wildwood looks to deliver an epic, high-stakes fantasy adventure in a way that only LAIKA can orchestrate. The trailer hints at a deeply layered plot involving Alexandra, the embittered and grieving leader of a hidden, dangerously alive forest realm, who looks to kidnap a baby boy from modern-day Portland to fill the void of a child she tragically lost. When the boy is abducted, his brave older sister, Prue McKeel, and her classmate, Curtis, courageously plunge into the forbidden, enchanted wilderness to rescue him. True to the studio's established DNA, the narrative looks to provide another grounded, emotionally mature exploration of loss, regret, and the universal weight of sibling protection.
True to the rigorous, hand-crafted standards of the company, the visual presentation previews a total stop-motion masterpiece. Stop-motion remains a rare, incredibly grueling art form in the modern blockbuster landscape, and the trailer hints at the jaw-dropping scale that has already earned the film immense industry buzz for pushing the absolute boundary of the medium as the longest stop-motion animated film ever made, running an unprecedented 2 hours and 12 minutes. To bring this epic, miniature world to life, the studio has made a brilliant, creative choice by securing legendary, six-time Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Caleb Deschanel to oversee the visual texture. Deschanel's live-action lighting expertise previews a stunning, painterly depth that beautifully captures the sweeping, organic environment of the forbidden woods, demonstrating how seamlessly tangible puppetry and high-concept cinematography can intertwine.  To maintain a truly riveting momentum across an epic running time, a fantasy feature requires an exceptionally tight, character-driven screenplay, and LAIKA's flawless track record gives audiences every reason to have confidence in the final product. Yet, even if the pacing should occasionally flag, there is no doubt that the sheer tangible spectacle of the physical puppets and sets will completely captivate theatergoers.
In terms of the vocal cast, the producers have spared absolutely no expense, assembling a magnificent lineup of premier talent. The trailer highlights an exceptional array of voices, including Carey Mulligan as Alexandra, Mahershala Ali as the bandit leader Brendan, Angela Bassett as the General, alongside Charlie Day, Jemaine Clement, and the iconic,  Tom Waits as Maxsim.
There is an immense amount of anticipation surrounding the upcoming rollout of Wildwood. Hand-crafted pieces of this scale are a total rarity today, and the film looks entirely poised to shake up the winter movie landscape. Positioned as a premier, high-prestige selection on the upcoming festival tracking lines, the feature is already generating heavy awards-season buzz, comfortably positioning itself to be a major, definitive contender not just in the Best Animated Feature category, but across multiple elite technical and craft divisions.

Final Verdict

★★★★★Anticipation Meter

Wildwood looks to become a monumental, breathtaking triumph for stop-motion animation, promising to deliver LAIKA's most structurally grand and visually dense cinematic universe to date. By pairing Travis Knight’s seasoned directorial eye with an elite, powerhouse vocal ensemble and Dario Marianelli's sweeping score infrastructure, the trailer footage showcases an extraordinary command over fantasy world-building. Wildwood is already garnering significant industry buzz for pushing the absolute boundary of the medium as the longest stop-motion animated film ever made, running an unprecedented 2 hours and 12 minutes.
