The Invite - Trailer Reaction
"A dinner party where the secrets are more dangerous than the drinks."
Social Chaos Reaction

Official Synopsis
From director Olivia Wilde and starring Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penelope Cruz and Edward Norton. THE INVITE – In theaters this July (Wide Release).
Joe and Angela are a couple whose marriage has hit a dull plateau. Seeking to spark some life into their routine, they invite their bohemian upstairs neighbors over for a night of drinks and conversation. However, the night takes a sharp, awkward, and hilariously tense turn when the neighbors propose an "unconventional" social experiment that forces Joe and Angela to confront their deepest insecurities.
Directed by Olivia Wilde, this remake of the acclaimed Spanish film Sentimental (The People Upstairs) promises a masterclass in claustrophobic comedy and razor-sharp dialogue.

Festival Sensation
The Invite was the absolute talk of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival. Following its world premiere, the film received a rare mountain-top standing ovation. The buzz was so intense it ignited a massive 72-hour bidding war between major players like Netflix, Focus Features, and Searchlight. Ultimately, A24 secured the rights for a staggering $12 million.
The Original Roots
This is an English-language remake of the Goya Award-winning 2020 Spanish film Sentimental (internationally known as The People Upstairs). Based on a stage play by Cesc Gay, the script was adapted for this version by the talented duo Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste & Jesse Forever).
The Road to Casting
The project underwent a significant creative overhaul before its current iteration. Originally, Amy Adams and Paul Rudd were attached to star as Joe and Angela, with the directors of Little Miss Sunshine (Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris) set to helm. When Wilde took the director's chair, she reimagined the lead roles, leading to the current buzz-heavy ensemble.

The Reaction
Fresh off the tremendous buzz from the Sundance Film Festival comes the trailer for the comedy film The Invite. The trailer offers a sharp look at two very different relationship dynamics: Edward Norton and Penรฉlope Cruz portray a confident, liberated, and sexually experimental couple, while Wilde and Seth Rogen appear as a typical long-term pair who have grown weary and perhaps a bit too comfortable in their predictable routine.
My favorite moments are the silent, exasperated looks Wilde directs at Rogen, clearly mortified by his behavior. It’s that specific brand of "long-term couple" stare that requires no explanation. This film promises plenty of effective cringe comedy, and it is refreshing to see Wilde return to a more focused, performance-driven character study after her recent big-budget, high-concept projects. The intimate setting gives it the intense, focused feel of a stage play. While theatrical audiences are hard to predict, I am confident this will translate beautifully to home entertainment and should be received warmly by critics.
