Trailer Reaction
We finally get a good look at the core story for Supergirl in this official trailer. It appears our favorite dog is in trouble! Krypto is seen being his mischievous self when he runs into some rough characters who cruelly incapacitate him. Because of this, it rekindles some feeling of loss in Kara who famously watched as Krypton was destroyed. The inciting incident seems to be that Kara has only 3 days to get an antidote from the antagonists, which spurs her adventure.
Along the way, she runs into a young lady also looking to exact revenge on the same crew. During their search, Kara runs into Lobo (Jason Momoa), who appears to join them in their mission. All this while the clock is ticking on our favorite little mutt! Oh yeah, Kara also has to deal with her worried cousin Superman checking in on her periodically to make sure she’s all right.
Overall, I think this is a great premise. A bit manipulative considering how everyone loves Krypto, but it’s a strong drive for the character. Audiences will no doubt sympathize—after all, revenge for "dog murder" was the famous premise for the John Wick franchise, and we all know how well that turned out. We also definitely get a taste of the tone, which is similar to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy aesthetic. While he isn’t directing here, his fingerprints are all over this trailer.
This is a highly anticipated debut for the character of Lobo and Momoa looks fantastic. It’s a bit awkward considering he recently played Aquaman, but based on the quality of this trailer, they’ve settled into a perfect mix of tone and characters. I’m excited to see where this all goes!
The Final Verdict
9.0
HIGHLY ANTICIPATED
"A perfect mix of cosmic action and emotional stakes."
