Together - Review: A Disturbing, Body-Horror Marriage Counseling

★★★☆☆

A perfectly serviceable body-horror film best served for genre fans.

Together is a perfectly serviceable body-horror film, though it is best served for fans of the genre. It features some of the most disturbing imagery and gross-out humor moments of 2025. The movie benefits immensely from the real-life marriage of Dave Franco and Alison Brie, a relationship that anchors the story as it revolves around the ups and downs of a modern partnership.

🎬 Cast & Crew

  • Director: Dave Franco
  • Starring: Alison Brie, Dave Franco
  • Key Dept: Cinematography by Guy Godfree

The Vision

The horror elements here play as an analogy of romantic insecurities and the difficulties of self-identity while sharing a life with someone. It’s a unique and sometimes humorous way to approach these profound issues. Non-horror fans may find the general silliness of the conceit hard to overcome, but the creativity and execution on display are admirable.

🎬 Cinephile Fun Facts

  • Real Life Chemistry: This marks the fourth collaboration between the married couple.
  • Practical Effects: Franco insisted on using practical "prosthetic suits" to heighten claustrophobia.
  • Sundance Premiere: Caused several walkouts during its midnight premiere due to its "visceral" final act.

✅ Pros

  • Excellent, lived-in chemistry between Brie and Franco.
  • Genuinely creepy, top-tier practical effects.
  • Clever use of horror as a metaphor for relationship codependency.

❌ Cons

  • The core conceit may feel too "silly" for non-horror audiences.
  • Body-horror elements are extremely graphic.

Full Review

A perfectly serviceable body horror film, Together is a story best served for fans of the genre. The movie features some of the most disturbing imagery and gross-out humor moments of 2025. It significantly benefits from the real-life marriage of Dave Franco and Alison Brie; that authentic chemistry anchors the story, which revolves around working through the messy ups and downs of a modern relationship.

The horror elements here play as an effective analogy for romantic insecurities and the difficulties of maintaining a self-identity while sharing a life with someone else. It is a unique, and at times humorous, way to approach these profound issues. I certainly admire the creativity and the execution on display, as the film is generally effective at what it sets out to do.

However, as someone who is not a horror fan—and especially averse to the body horror sub-genre—I just couldn’t get over the general silliness of it all. While that is definitely "on me," the thrills and genuinely creepy moments felt somewhat wasted on a viewer with my sensibilities. Together certainly has its share of disturbing scenes that will stick with you, but if you are unable to turn yourself over to the conventions and fantasy elements of horror, this will likely be a hard pass.

That said, if you love horror films and appreciate a creative spin on relationship dynamics, this should definitely be added to your movie queue. It is a bold, visceral piece of work that knows exactly which buttons to push for its target audience.

🏆 Final Verdict

While the gross-out moments aren't for everyone, Together succeeds as a sharp, disturbing exploration of marriage. If you can stomach the practical effects, Brie and Franco's performances make it worth the watch.
