Marvel Studios Reportedly Cancels 'Wonder Man' Despite Emmy Success

No Season Two for the hit Marvel Series on Disney Plus

In a shocking turn of events, Marvel Studios has reportedly cancelled Wonder Man after just one season. The decision comes at a highly precarious time for the studio, following a highly successful presentation at San Diego Comic-Con and just ahead of their upcoming D23 Expo. Audiences are expected to make their displeasure known at the typically raucous D23 event.
Historical Emmy Recognition Cut Short
Adding to the awkward timing of the cancellation is the current awards traction for the series. Lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II recently secured an Emmy nomination for his performance in the titular role. This marks a historic milestone as the first-ever acting Emmy nomination for a Marvel Studios Disney+ series.
Future MCU Appearances for Simon Williams
Insiders are attempting to soften the blow for fans, clarifying that this cancellation does not mean the end of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sources indicate that Simon Williams will eventually surface in other upcoming projects:
  • The Young Avengers / Champions: Wonder Man could serve as a veteran mentor in the rumored team-up project.
  • The X-Men / Mutant Introduction: Speculation suggests the MCU version of Simon Williams might be retconned as a Mutant, opening the door for him to appear at the X-Mansion alongside the X-Men.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Responds
For his part, Abdul-Mateen II has taken the disappointing announcement in stride. The actor posted a heartfelt message to his fans on Instagram, thanking them for their support and celebrating the historic Emmy recognition.

Editorial: Is Marvel Alienating Top Talent?

From an industry perspective, this cancellation is deeply disheartening. Wonder Man was arguably one of the most cohesive and critically acclaimed television shows produced by Marvel Studios.
When combined with the current lack of forward momentum on Shang-Chi 2, Marvel risks alienating filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton. Cretton, who guided Wonder Man as an executive producer and director, is a major creative asset for the studio, especially on the heels of his massive success directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Sidelining his projects feels like a major misstep during Marvel's current creative resurgence.

UPDATE: Andrew Guest has now commented on the cancellation:

"Just want to say I’ve been listening, I appreciate you all. I feel how you all feel, and I just want to clear up when I can here. This is not a marketing stunt. There is no movie in the works, and Destin Daniel Cretton’s schedule and no one’s schedule was an issue. Yahya (Abdul Mateen II), Destin, Sir Ben (Kingsley) and I all loved making this show. All felt passionately about continuing to do it, and were eager to. Contracts were signed, schedules were cleared. The writers’ room was supposed to start this month. The production was supposed to begin early next year, and there was a decision made internally between Disney and Marvel that this didn’t make sense for them, even though a few months ago it did. And that’s essentially all I really know."
